Samsung announces printed electronics developments

Samsung and its university partners, Stanford University and Sungkyunkwan University, have claimed to have solved two of the last problems in producing large-scale printable electronics.

An n-type organic semiconductor material, along with a patterning method for separately producing nano and micro-wire transistor channels has been developed by the company.

The discoveries will be able to be applied to printable electronics such as large-scale displays, sensor arrays, flexible solar panels and digital paper.

Zhenan Bao, a Stanford University professor who worked on the research, said: 'We studied both single wires and many wires between source and drain electrodes. Single wires were studied to measure their charge carrier mobility, which is the largest of any reported n-type organic transistors.'

The researchers now want to demonstrate how to align complex circuits using both organic and inorganic materials.

Chemistry professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Dong Chan-Lee recently won a National Science Foundation award for similar work, in which he created n-type semiconductor nanomaterials for organic solar cells, according to the universityLs student newspaper.
